Build a Band
by: jada nazarian, gigi vasquez, and sophia moreno
For our project, our goal was to build a fully functioning instrument that played a full octave based off of sound waves. All sounds are created by vibrations, and the instrument I was given strings. Each person in the group had to create an instrument and initially "build a band." The other two instruments were percussion and wind. Before building, we created a blueprint to discover what we had to do to create the sound waves to create an octave that sounded like whatever instrument you were building, in my case it was a ukulele. Shown to the left is my finished instrument and it created the full octave by me holding down the "C" string and playing in a certain spot all the way down the string. Shown below is the document our group created describing all the minor details.

Concepts
Trough: the lowest point on the wave
Frequency: number of waves that travel through a point at a certain moment in time
Wave length: the number of crests of a wave that move past a given point in a given unit of time
Velocity: rate of distance covered in a direction
Hertz: a complete cycle of vibration that passes
Period: unit of frequency; one cycle per second
Constructive Interference: Two waves on top of each other that double up
Destructive Interference: Two waves that are opposite to each other that cancel out
Transverse Wave: a wave vibrating at right angles to the direction of its propagation
Longitudinal Wave: a wave vibrating in the direction of propagation
Crest: maximum value of a wave
Amplitude: distance from the center of the wave to the top or bottom
Compression: the spot in a longitudinal wave where the particles are close to each other
Rarefaction: the spot in a longitudinal wave where the particles are far from each other

Reflection
This was personally one of my favorite projects. I've always been interested in music so this was really fun for me. It was a bit of an inconvenience when right before I was supposed to build my blueprint got ruined but I worked through it. The only thing difficult about this project was figuring out the exact spots of the place to flick to make the string the sound for the octave. I feel like I was better in this project with leadership because I helped out one of my group members when she needed it, but like every other project I keep using my time not well. I also feel like with work productivity I did a lot better. I tried really hard on this project and I think it turned out well. Even though I did good, I could've stuck more to the schedule I set for myself instead of "winging" it.
