Overview:
The goal for this project was to find a disease caused by a protein malfunction in the body, and also be able to explain protein synthesis and compare normal proteins to diseased ones. Our group chose Creutzfeldt-Jakob Disease which is caused by a protein malfunction in the brain.
Evidence of Work:
We presented our work through a poster which details all the information necessary for the project (shown below).
On this poster, included is a summarization of what Creutzfedlt-Jakob Disease is, symptoms of the disease, which protein is affected, who is most susceptible to it, if there are any treatments/cures, barriers to curing it, and if there is any interesting research going on.
Each day we were given something protein related to study and understand by the end of the class period related to the project. BY the end of the project we should have a complete understanding of protein synthesis and protein folding. The steps include DNA found in the nucleus, transcription of the protein, then translation. We also found a relating disease to Creutzfedlt-Jackob Disease which is Mad Cow Disease, which is found in cows but can be spread to humans through eating meat from cows. Concepts:Protein Synthesis: The process of transcription and translation of the DNA, along with protein folding.
Proteins: A large molecule composed up of twenty amino acids that helps make the body function. Amino Acids: Amino acids are building blocks for proteins RNA: mRNA assist that transcribes and translates DNA Transcription: The first step of protein synthesis which splits the DNA and codes the mRNA. Translation: The second step of protein synthesis which mRNA is used by tRNA to produce a polypeptide chain. |
Reflection:
I thought for this project I did good work. I completed plenty of the questions required and I wrote down the information on the poster. I thought the time management was really successful because we got a lot of work done with time to spare to improve the poster. I could've stayed on task more and made the poster more detailed. On this project I learned what protein induced diseases cause to the body and how protein synthesis works. I thought I worked well and I will continue to improve on time management which is something I always had trouble in.
