Overview
For our project, this is the slideshow we used. Our project was to create a design for the new S.T.E.M building that will be added to the campus over the next few years. We had plenty of ideas and a 3D model to show what we think will be a good addition to the S.T.E.M building. In the beginning of the project, we learned about solar techniques and the solar system, along with the earth's layers. This helped us with natural sunlight that we thought should be incorporated into the new classes.
Evidence of work
Earth's Layers
Towards the beginning of the project, we learned about the Earth's layers. We reviewed the inside of the earth, and all of the layers that make it up. We focused a lot on the core and how sunlight is affected by it. We went over seismographs and how the core is most likely solid. We took notes and we read an article about it. I've always enjoyed learning about space and time and how all those things work, so when we were learning about the solar system for a small amount of time I was moderately excited about it. We did a poster on the solar system, and tried to figure out information about this planet our teacher told us about called "Planet X." We had to see if our model was accurate, then we would present it to the class.
Atomic Structure
A few days before we started the project, we took notes and read some articles about what makes up an atom. When you think of an atom you usually think of a really tiny dot that is invisible to the eye. But once you break it down it is a very complex thing. During this lecture we went of the Gold Foil Experiment. It is saying that an atom is made up of mostly empty space, but there is still a nucleus. After all of that we saw that heat is a factor in all of it, which helped us picked out what we needed for our project.
Day lighting Design Model
I enjoyed doing the day lighting design model. Before thinking about the actual design and blueprint for our S.T.E.M building, we did a day lighting design model to help us with how solar light would transfer through a room or a home. We had to create a small 1000 square foot house with two rooms, minimum and a bathroom. We had to also have some sort of lighting technique, whether it be windows, a skylight, etc. Our group decided windows would be a good way to go for our building. Once we are finished with the house, we blocked out all the solar sunlight and used artificial light (lamps) to see how well our idea worked. For us, the light went through not much of the house, so we cut out more windows until all rooms had some sort of light going through it. I thought this was pretty fun and it helped me gain a better understanding of how light works.
Reflection
This was one of the projects that I didn't enjoy as much. I had fun learning about all the information on all things solar and more information on the earth. It was really cool creating a design, though because we had a lot of freedom. I really liked the sun dial and the fact that some things may be incorporated into the new S.T.E.M design buildings. It's really like we can make a change in our schools community. I feel like I did a good job in my group and helped with some new good ideas. I could've managed my time better along with the entire group, but we ended up getting it done. In the beginning, some group members didn't get along to well.
